WILL SMITH - BIOGRAPHY |

African-American entertainer Will Smith's first paying job was as a rap singer in his native Philadelphia. He fronted a popular group called DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince. By the time he was 21, Smith had made and lost a fortune thanks to bad management, but recouped most of his losses within a year. At 23, Smith was starred in his own TV sitcom, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, in which he played a street-smart kid transplanted to the posh California home of wealthy relatives. The series was not only a hit on the network, but has since gone on to a lucrative syndicated career. After five years of cracking wise on TV, Smith made a surprise (and successful) movie debut as an action-adventure hero in Bad Boys (1995). Though he himself had turned down a scholarship to MIT to pursue his career, Will Smith has become one of the strongest public proponents of the "Stay in School!" campaign. |
