An 8th generation Texan, actor Tommy Lee Jones attended Harvard University, where he roomed with future U.S. Vice President Al Gore. Though several of his less knowledgable fans have tended to dismiss Jones as a roughhewn redneck, the actor is equally at home on the polo fields (he's a champion player) as he was on the oil fields, where he made his living for many years. Jones made his stage bow in 1969 in A Patriot for Me; in 1970 he appeared in his first film, Love Story (listed way, way down the cast as one of Ryan O'Neal's frat buddies). Jones' first film leading role was in the obscure Canadian film Eliza's Horoscope (1970). After a stint on the daytime soap opera One Life to Live, Jones gained national attention in 1976, when he was cast in the title role in the TV miniseries The Amazing Howard Hughes (the resemblance, both vocally and visually, was positively uncanny). In 1982, he won an Emmy for his startling performance as murderer Gary Gilmore in The Executioner's Song. Eleven years later, Jones was honored with both an Oscar and a Golden Globe for his work in the movie blockbuster The Fugitive (1993). In recent years, the prolific Jones has adopted two distinct acting styles: subtle and sensitive for roles that call for such qualities, and over-the-top, Armour Star hamminess for such assignments as Under Siege (1993) and Natural Born Killers (1994). There was absolutely no controlling Jones in his broad portrayal of Two-Face in Batman Forever (95), the film that put him in the same action-figure category as the "cast" of Jurassic Park. Reputed to be as irascible and unpredictable offscreen as on, Jones prefers living in San Antonio, Texas, with his second wife Kimberlea and his two children.
