Based
on the satirical novel by William Goldman, The
Princess Bride is staged in the form of a bedtime story related
by Jewish-accented Peter Falk to his grandson. Thus it shouldn't be
surprising that this story of a stableboy (Cary Elwes) who woos, rescues
and wins a princess (Robin Wright) has a decided Borscht-Belt flavor.
The plot is merely an excuse for the antics of such proven laugh-getters
as Wallace Shawn, Mandy Patinkin and Christopher Guest. Also around
and about are wrestler Andre the Giant, more or less playing himself,
and Chris Sarandon as the neurotically villainous Prince Humperdinck.
We never believe it for a minute, but Princess
Bride is a joy to behold from fade-in to fade-out.
