Before becoming an actor, Michael Keaton attended Kent State University and took on a dizzying series of jobs, including stand-up comic. Keaton briefly worked on the tech crew of Pittsburgh's PBS TV station, where he made his earliest on-camera appearances. He joined the LA branch of Second City, then served as writer and actor on such Hollywood-based TV series as All's Fair (1977), The Mary Tyler Moore Hour (1979) and Report to Murphy (1982). Keaton also co-starred with his old pal Jim Belushi in the slapsticky TV sitcom Working Stiffs (1979). In 1982, he made as auspicious a big-screen debut as has ever been seen, playing the relentlessly cheerful owner of a combination morgue and brothel in 1982's Night Shift. This remarkable comic performance was followed by such so-so vehicles as Johnny Dangerously (1984) and Gung Ho (1985), thinnish films held together by isolated moments of comedy genius. Thanks to director Tim Burton, Keaton received the role of a lifetime as the gross, obscene, unkempt title character in the 1988 comedy-fantasy Beetlejuice. He went on to display his acting versatility in such roles as a chronic substance abuser in Clean and Sober (1989) and a psychotic tenant in Pacific Heights (1990). Again collaborating with Tim Burton, Keaton starred in the first two big-budget Batman feature films, bringing depth and sensitivity to the otherwise two-dimensional role of millionaire Bruce Wayne (aka Batman). While not all of Michael Keaton's subsequent film roles have been huge successes, they continue to demonstrate his apparently boundless range; in his most recent starring role, four different Michael Keatons can be seen on the same screen as the collective result of a misfired cloning experiment in Multiplicity (1996).
