The daughter of actress Tippi Hedrin, Melanie Griffith left her home at age 14 to live with actor Don Johnson, who was co-starring with her mother in The Harrad Experiment(1973). Griffith married Johnson in 1975, and that same year began appearing in Lolita-type roles in such films as Night Moves and The Drowning Pool (her previous professional experience consisted of a few modelling jobs). At 19, she divorced Johnson, and because of personal problems became persona non grata with Hollywood casting agents. Griffith began making a comeback in the early 1980s, studying acting with Stella Adler and starring in the Brian DePalma thriller Body Double (1984). In 1988, she starred in Working Girl, her most successful film up to that time, and for her role earned a Golden Globe award. After wrapping Working Girl, she contacted Don Johnson again; their reunion led to their second marriage in 1989 (in the interim, Griffith had wed actor Stephen Bauer). While her private life gained equilibrium, her career was tarnished by such disastrous film assignments as Bonfire of the Vanities. In 1994, Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson parted yet once more; since then, she has been involved in a well-publicized international romance with and marriage to Spanish film star Antonio Banderas, and in September of 1996 Griffith gave birth to their daughter, Stella del Carmen. |
