Kevin Bacon's training began with the Manning Street Actor's Theatre in Philadelphia. His first film, at age 20, was National Lampoon's Animal House, while his first regular TV work was on the soap opera The Guiding Light. Bacon entered the teen-idol category with his leading role in 1984's Footloose. He periodically returned to the stage, winning an Obie Award for the off-Broadway play Forty Deuce. After several iffy movie vehicles, Bacon discovered that his weight as an actor more effectively fell in colorful secondary roles: among his more recent supporting-cast assignments are Willie O'Keefe JFK (1991), the prosecuting attorney in A Few Good Men (1993), a cold-blooded villain in The River Wild (1994), Alcatraz lifer Henri Young in Murder in the First (1994), and astronaut Swigert in Apollo 13 (1995). Kevin Bacon has long been married to actress Kyra Sedgwick, whom he when they were both rehearsing for a PBS production of the play Lemon Sky in 1989. In addition to his fame as an actor, Bacon has earned a different kind of notoriety on the Internet as the subject of a phenomenally popular game, known as "The Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon," or simply "The Kevin Bacon Game," in which contestants try to link various movie stars over the past 15 years (or even farther back in some version) to Kevin Bacon to prove that he is the center of Hollywood. Created by three fraternity brothers, Craig Fass, Mike Ginelli and Brian Turtle during a night of revelry, the game has been transferred to board form and is being sold in stores. |
