Woody
Allen's Husbands and Wives
is a moving examination about marriage and divorce, and how it affects
two New York couples. Woody Allen
and Mia Farrow play a couple who
are shocked that their best friends, Sydney Pollack and Judy Davis,
are separating. Following the news, Allen and Farrow begin to speculate
about the future of their own relationship, with Allen beginning a serious
flirtation with his writing student, Juliette
Lewis, and Farrow developing a crush on Davis' new love, Liam
Neeson. Though it contains several uncomfortable jokes, Husbands
and Wives is one of Allen's best "serious" films, one that captures
the pain and sorrow of a dissolving marriage. The only thing that hampers
the film is the distracting, constantly-moving hand-held camerawork.
Though it is designed to make the film look like a documentary, it actually
prevents the audience from engaging themselves emotionally with the
film.
