Upon his discharge from the Marine Corps, Harvey Keitel trained for an acting career under some of the best coaches in the business. Keitel then spent several years in cabaret, stock, repertory and off-Broadway. In 1965, he answered an open casting call conducted by fledgling director Martin Scorsese. The resultant film, Who's That Knocking at My Door (released in 1968), launched a long professional relationship between Keitel and Scorcese, which remained durable despite their artistic differences. The actor's Scorcese-directed efforts include Mean Streets (1973), Taxi Driver (1975), Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1976), and Last Temptation of Christ (1988, as very urban-sounding Judas). Though a New Yorker from top to bottom, Keitel has flourished in his occasional forays into foreign filmmaking, notably as Tom Paine in the French La Nuit de Varennes (1981) and Pontius Pilate in the Italian The Inquiry (1987). He also starred in British director Ridley Scott's inaugural effort The Duellists (1977), which though plagued by a troubled production history proved an aesthetic triumph for all concerned. More recently, Keitel was on the ground floor of the Quentin Tarantino phenomenon, co-producing Reservoir Dogs (1993) and co-starring in Pulp Fiction (1994). He gained latter-day notoriety for his full frontal nudity in both The Bad Lieutenant (1992) and The Piano (1993; one of his finest performances). By his very nature a mercurial, prickly screen personality, Keitel can be a nice guy on screen, as witness Thelma and Louise (1992). In 1991, Keitel received an Academy Award nomination for his riveting portrayal of gangster Mickey Cohen in Bugsy. Harvey Keitel was at one time married to actress Lorraine Bracco. |
