Discovered by comedian Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock is one of the brightest lights in late '90s comedy and is noted for his dead-on observations of politics and modern society, particularly issues confronting African-American communities. Becoming a comedian had been Rock's boyhood dream while growing up in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. He was 18 and performing at New York's Comedy Strip when he met Murphy, who was so impressed with the caustic young funnyman that he cast him in Beverly Hills Cop II (1987). From there he played small supporting roles in two films and in 1989 was made one of the Not Ready for Primetime Players on the NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live. He remained with the show for three years, periodically drifting over to Keenan Ivory Wayans In Living Color as a guest performer.. When not rehearsing for the series, Rock was involved with films. His performance as a rather innocent crackhead/informant in Mario Van Peebles powerful New Jack City (1991) attracted considerable favorable attention. Rock made his screenwriting debut with a feature-length parody of gangsta-rap. Though hailed as the new Eddie Murphy, Rock seems to have found a comfortable niche in feature films like Beverly Hills Ninja- (1997) as a supporting actor. His television career, however is a different story. In 1997, his scathing HBO comedy special Bring on the Pain! (1996) earned Rock two Emmy awards. That year, he also received an Emmy nomination for his work as a writer and correspondent on Comedy Central's Politically Incorrect with Bill Mahr (which switched to the ABC network in 1997). Rock has published a book reflecting his views and personal experiences Rock This! |
