George
Axelrod adapted Truman Capote's novella to the screen in this sentimental
but robust film version, blithely directed by Blake Edwards. Audrey
Hepburn gives the performance of a lifetime as the carefree and charming
Holly Golightly, who is described perfectly at one point in the film
when Martin Balsam says, "She's a phony, all right. But a real phony."
The opening of the film is an extended party sequence in Holly's apartment
that appears to be a warm up for Blake Edwards' later film, The
Party. It is there that Holly meets Paul (George Peppard), the
Truman Capote, surrogate, who can't take his eyes of her because he
is charmed by her and can't figure her out -- particularly her relationship
with a jailed crime lord. But Paul isn't all stars and light either
-- he is involved in a dominating relationship with the rich 2-E (Patricia
Neal), who may be a lesbian or at least a bisexual. Whatever the case,
her words bother Paul so much that he can't let his emotions go and
throw his love Holly's way. Soon, however, all the shams and bottled
emotions are revealed when Doc Golightly (Buddy Ebsen) arrives from
Texas and reveals secrets about Holly's past.
